Some of you might not even remember why you are getting this email. Others might be wondering what happened to me. I was sitting on the couch watching TV when I felt a muscle spasm in my back. A shock of pain followed, and the muscles locked up over the next two days, but it slowly subsided.
Then a strange tingle started in my left foot like it was falling asleep all the time. But the sensation continued to creep towards pain. After two weeks, it felt like I was being stabbed and burned in my foot every second of every day.
I saw a doctor, and he gave me a prescription, but it didn’t help. There were many tests and physical therapy, but nothing changed. I slept once every three days because that is how long it took to reach a point of exhaustion where my body could ignore the pain. Months rolled past in a blur of pain.
I saw my doctor many times, and we tried many things, but the pain never disappeared. Eventually, he put me on some powerful painkillers. Finally, the pain was gone, but my mind was fogged. I couldn’t think. My body felt weird all the time, but at least I could sleep at night.
More months passed until I got a text message from an old high school friend. I detailed my problem, and he said he had the exact same thing a few years ago. He sent me a video on exactly how to fix the problem.
I protested after a first glance. I’d tried it. It didn’t work. He insisted, “The video was particular, leg position, head position, hand position, duration, number of repetitions, how often, etc...Trust me. It works”
I followed the video, and after a year in a blur of pain and painkillers, I was finally starting to get better. But it had been two years.
After my nerves started to heal, I realized my writing and marketing had stopped entirely. I needed to get the engine running again.
The first step was writing. I re-read the last draft of The Final Sky Fall and hated it. I threw out the last half of the book and started from there. I hated it again. It was wrong, and I didn’t know why.
Eventually, I called my writing partner, and we sat down for a plot discussion. I went over everything, and he helped me identify what was wrong. Why my original ideas wouldn’t work to end the series. Together we brainstormed a much better climax and ending. I was happy and could start writing again.
The next step was fixing my marketing, something many of you have mentioned to me over the years. But this has gone on long enough, and I’ll cover that in the next email for that want to know.
